Detecting Early Stage Clementine Decline

Farming is not like most jobs. It requires patience, passion, and years of experience, yet farmers are still faced with the unpredictable nature of the industry. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to have detailed programs in place to effectively measure and monitor the production line on one’s farm.

Identifying possible threats and diseases before they manifest is crucial. Luckily for one of Aerobotics’s citrus farmers, Robert Paterson, Aeroview made an astonishing find from Paterson’s recently uploaded drone data.

After analysing the high resolution images that Paterson uploaded for his orchard, Aeroview software was able to differentiate areas under stress from the healthier areas. The results presented anomalies specifically on one side of the orchard.

Selecting the tree ‘Health Data’ layer on Aeroview, Paterson was able to view each individual tree that was under stress. He filtered out the healthy trees to get a clearer view of exactly which trees were marked as red and orange dots by Aeroview. From here, Paterson put the results to the test. He created a scouting mission, targeting the sick trees, and set out into the field to see them up close using the Scout App.

Windbreak stress and rootstock incompatibility were the reasons for the signs of decline our farmer faced across his clementine orchard. Aeroview’s software was able to precisely locate and guide the farmer to the specific trees under stress. The results were clear and timely. Paterson found that the trees affected by windbreak stress where yielding 50% less than usual and that the trees affected by rootstock incompatibility some 30% less.

Altogether, because of Aeroview’s software and the farmer’s prompt response to the data, Paterson was able to take action on the affected trees. We valued the loss that Paterson avoided at R51 000* - and that’s just covering a fraction of his entire farm. The yield gained from the 4-hectare orchard under analysis could pay for the whole farm’s 100-hectare drone data for 3 years!

Only 4% of the trees in this orchard were affected, but at Aerobotics, we recognise the value in that 4%. Early detection is crucial when it comes to treating the beginning signs of crop infestations. Allow our team of specialists to help you gain control over threatened crops and lessen the impact on your yield, using our innovative Aeroview Software.
